India Earthquake: Earthquake Pakistan & north India, An earthquake of magnitude 7.5 struck near India's Nicobar Islands, Indian Ocean. The U.S. Geological Survey said it occurred about 150 kilometers (95 miles) west of the Nicobar Islands and 440 km from Sumatra, Indonesia.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially issued a warning to the entire Indian Ocean region.

The agency has downgraded the following warning to India just before canceling the alert altogether.

"Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was not generated significant," the Hawaii-based center said.

No damage was reported in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, even if a blackout caused panic in the capital, Port Blair, witnesses said.

More than 350,000 people live on about 600 islands of the archipelago from a distance.

In 2004, a powerful earthquake off the coast of Sumatra triggered a tsunami that killed more than 220,000 people around the Indian Ocean.
