Jejuri is one of the famous pilgrimage centers in Maharashtra. It is known all over the world as the holy shrine of Lord Khandoba who is the deity of many families in India. Jejuri has always been the source of inspiration and spiritual exaltation for many. Theists believe that this place is hallowed by the divine presence of Lord Khandoba and hence serves as the powerhouse for them.
Where is it located?
The city of Jejuri is located in the district of Pune in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It lies in the South East of Pune towards Phaltan. It is just 51 km away from the city of Pune and so one can easily plan a one day trip to this holy place of pilgrimage.
Historical Highlights:
The place Jejuri proclaims its own importance in the history of Maharashtra. Mughal King Aurangzeb intended to destroy the temple of Khandoba in 1690. However, it proved to be the futile effort. It is said the Mughal army was marching forth destroying the important Hindu temples in Maharashtra. The army reached Jejuri with an intention of creating havoc all around but unintentionally disturbed a beehive. Bees in turn attacked the army and the Mughals could not help but to leave Jejuri.
In yet another historical highlight, the place is known for the famous meeting of the father and the son. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj met his father Shahajiraje Bhosale after a long period here in Jejuri. It is said that they had an important discussion on the war strategies to be adopted in their revolt against the Mughals.
