How to reduce Windows 2003/2008 Group Policy Refresh Interval

Group Policy is a great way to deploy settings to users and computers centrally — unless you wind up waiting for the updates. The default interval to update the Group Policy to a computer account is 90 minutes; further, there is an offset of 0-30 minutes. While this schedule is fine for most situations, there may be times when you need to make it shorter for quick updates.

There are various ways to shorten the Group Policy refresh interval. But be careful when you make these changes because it will increase the traffic from domain controllers to computer accounts.

One approach is to have the server computer accounts receive a tighter refresh policy, with the assumption that there are fewer servers than client computers. The refresh interval is defined in Group Policy in the Policies | Administrative Templates | System | Group Policy section in a value called Group Policy Refresh For Computers (Figure A). After the Group Policy Refresh For Computers value is selected, it is represented in minutes that will determine how frequently the computer accounts will try to update the policy.

Another option is the offset labeled Random Time Added. The offset is important because it ensures that the domain controllers don't get perpetually bamboozled with request for updates. Figure B has a tightened value for the update refresh interval.

Users have been reporting for some time that the Windows update website at http://update.microsoft.com doesn't work for Windows 7 users.

There is however another website you can go to.

Visit: http://test.catalog.update.microsoft.com/

- Type Windows 7 in the search box and click Search

- You will then see a list of all Windows 7 updates.

- Select the ones you want to download by clicking Add

- Then view your basket and Download the updates to a folder of your choice.

- Once downloaded, simply double click the files to manually install.

Sri Ramanavami "Rama Rama Rama Rama Rama Rama Rama"

Sri-Ramnavami is dedicated to the memory of Lord Rama. It occurs on the ninth day (navami). The festival commemorates the birth of Rama who is remembered for his preperous and righteous reign. Ramrajya (the reign of Rama) has become synonymous with a period of peace and prosperity. Mahatma Gandhi also used this term to describe how, according to him, India should be after independence. Ramnavami occurs in the month of March. Celebrations begin with a prayer to the Sun early in the morning. At midday, when Lord Rama is supposed to have been born, a special prayer is performed. In northern India especially, an event that draws popular participation is the Ramnavami procession. The main attraction in this procession is a gaily decorated chariot in which four persons are dressed up as Rama, his brother Laxman, his queen Sita and his disciple Hanuman. The chariot is accompanied by several other persons dressed up in ancient costumes as work by Rama's solders. The procession is a gusty affair with the participants shouting praises echoing the happy days of Rama's reign. Surya - The Sun was recognised as the source of light and heat even in ancient times. The importance of the Sun was much more in the higher latitudes from where the Aryans are supposed to have migrated into India. Fully functional Garmin GPS on Nokia E71

After being totally lost in Helsinki while using Nokia Maps software trying to connect to the internet every 2 seconds (hand giving my operator to send me an internet bill of 80€ - yes I had downloaded the total map to my unit !) I had decided that Nokia's built-in GPS function was no better than the Google Maps thing. Given up hope.

While I was searching for a separate GPS device on the net, I came across some software called Garmin Mobile XT (GMXT) which is built for Symbian devices. With more dire research, I found out that GMXT actually works on Nokia E71, just like a GPS unit and it doesn't need to connect to the internet all the time to download map info*. Again, browsing through tens of forums, I saw alot of people trying to install the software, but due to lack of technical know-how, they were not succeeding. So I experimented it on my phone and succeeded.

Luckily, I have noted the method I used step-by-step, which I think it will ease and save alot of time and cash spent on external GPS devices.

What You Get: You give the address you want to go, it directs you to the destination with graphics and VOICE. As Garmin is the best GPS brand, its working pretty correctly. It can also recalculate route, download traffic, emergency info as well as hotels, places of interest etc. Pretty cool !

How to fix File Assocation errors in Windows 7

File Associations in Windows 7 can sometimes just stop working. This can occur after a software or Windows Update. Sometimes even upgrades can cause files to just not open. This issue is especially common with Microsoft Office file associations like doc, docx, xls, xlsx, ppt, pptx, pps, ppsx to name a few. To resolve follow the simple steps below: - Click Start and then Run Type regedit and click Ok (This opens the registry editor) Navigate to Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications and find your .exe name For example purposes I have browsed to EXCEL (See pic below) Expand EXCEL -> shell -> open -> command (See pic below)

- In the right hand pane double click the (Default) string and change the path to the location of the actual executable (Microsoft Excel in this case)

- Click OK and close Registry Editor

- Now simply reassociate the file type as you normally would.
